It’s a right-handed world out there so we feel for you poor lefties.
You no doubt spent your early years struggling at school with cutting and gluing using scissors that were designed for your other hand. Some right-handed person taught you to tie your shoelaces backwards, and you made a mess of your handwriting…the list goes on. And now you’re an adult, life isn’t much easier.
Well, that right-hand bias needs to stop! Just because 90% of the world’s population uses their right hand, doesn’t mean the poor 10% of lefties should be left right out. You’re a professional hairdresser working in a career that needs specialised tools to do your job. You deserve to have well-designed hairdressing scissors like every right-handed person has ready access to.
Left and right-handed scissors are a mirror image of each other. The left blade on left-handed scissors is always on top. And when you open a pair of standard scissors, the blade on the right side will be the one on top. You can turn the scissors over and the result is the same.
It’s not possible to manufacture any kind of scissors, professional hairdressing scissors or otherwise, to be universal and suitable for left and right hand people.
You might see household or children’s scissors promoted as suitable for left or right-handed people and those clever ambidextrous peeps. But they’re right handed scissors which have had the handle design changed so they can be held in the left hand without the usual discomfort of standard scissors. However, the scissors blade still obscures the user’s view when used in the left hand.
When you use a pair of standard scissors in your left hand, they don’t cut well. It doesn’t matter what material you’re trying to cut – paper, fabric, plastic or hair – it bends between the blades rather than being cut cleanly. With the blades reversed on left hand scissors, it’s possible to cut the material.
Using standard scissors in your left hand means it’s difficult to see where you’re cutting. The blades block the cutting line from sight which can be a problem when you’re in school trying to cut on the line and disastrous if you’re cutting hair!
Using scissors in the opposite hand isn’t comfortable. A left-handed person using right handed scissors may try to move the handles apart laterally. Not only is this uncomfortable but it can even cause injury to the thumb around the first knuckle. The handles can rub and cause calluses. Hardly conducive to a day’s work of hairdressing!
In years gone by, left-handed hairdressers either learned to cut right-handed or did the best they could with a standard pair in their left hand. Now things are much easier with all sizes and types of professional hairdressing scissors available as left and right-handed options. Left-handers are almost spoilt for choice now or at least not at a disadvantage like they once were!
It really is a right handed world! Most everyday and professional products don’t have a left-handed option. It leaves 10% of the world’s population frustrated and struggling to make do as best they can.
But at least you’ve chosen a career that has professional left-handed tools that allow you to do your job safely and efficiently. But there are plenty of everyday and professional items that don’t have an alternative for right handers. You’ll no doubt agree that life would be easier if there was a left handed alternative for the following products:
Now you need not wait for International Lefthanders Day to roll around each year on 13 August to feel the love. You can have your day every day at work with professional left-handed hairdressing scissors!
